Masina Hospital installed 44.8 (kWp) Solar rooftop plant in the month of September, year 2017. An initiative taken by the management of Masina hospital, has reduced the monthly electricity bill by an average of 2800 units per month, which results in savings of Rs. 30,240/- approximately. The electricity generated from these panels is empowering the consumption of hospital Main building, ICU & even Operation theatre and has considerably reduced the electricity bills. Apart from cutting down on electricity bills, the main motive was to utilize the energy from our solar system and change the perspective of people towards understanding the benefits of solar energy. We are saving more than Rs. 30,000/- a month and that can be anticipated to Rs. 3,60,000/- annually. Solar panels spread across 364 Sq.M area, generating approximately about 147 kilowatt hour (kWh) electricity per day. On a bright sunny day, the power generated can reach up to 176kWh and can drop up to 45kWh during the monsoon days. This renewable energy source will not only help the city to cope up the higher demands of electric consumption but also can help reach areas where there is lack of electricity supply. Soon as the perspective of people changes, we may get to see the solar panels installed on most of the roof tops across Mumbai city.
Using Smart
Appliances
-
Along with the of Solar panel, Masina hospital has also emphasized on initiatives like
-
Replacing regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) or LED bulbs which is a big energy saver.
-
Training the Staff & emphasizing on Turning off the lights & other electrical appliances when not in use.
-
Unplug appliances that aren't in use, as appliances that are plugged in keep using energy, even when they're switched off.
-
Replacing old appliances like A/Cs, Geysers, Refrigerators, etc. with energy-saving models. This is the simplest, most common way to save electricity, and it really works.
Utilization of
Biogas
In the last One year, since the inception of Bio-Compost plant, Waste generated by the two organizations (Masina Hospital and Old age home) are kept separate in Three bins; Wet waste, Recyclable dry waste and Medical waste. They are trained by Apna Ghar Vrudhashram in Composting and Bio-methanation, check the wet waste, mix it with a de-moisturizer and put it into a prefabricated FRP compost pit designed to accommodate the Hospital’s 350 kg wet waste per day. These pits are sponsored by Voltas Ltd. under their CSR initiative. “There is no smell, it is marvelous to think that garbage can be made so easily into compost, The process of composting helps prevent pollution, reduces carbon, enables the soil to retain water & nutrients, eliminates the need of transporting garbage in trucks to faraway places, produces low cost alternatives to fertilizers and pesticides, reduces air pollution & encourages community activity
Efficient
Waste Management
Furthermore we are now taking the next step to convert the Bio-waste to Bio gas and a new Bio gas plant has been installed which will be commissioned in 2 to 3 weeks' time following which more than 500 kgs of sewage will be treated at site and Cooking gas worth one domestic cylinder a day will be generated resulting in further saving of cost and environment.
Scaling in
Waste Management
In 2018, Sewage treatment plant (STP) was commissioned and made operational and in 2020 an Effluent treatment plant (ETP) was also commissioned at Masina Hospital. While these are mandatory requirements the positive features of this plant is all the water that is the bio production of Sewage treatment plant and Effluent are used to provide recycled water to the plants and trees in our 7 to 8 acres Green Complex. Along with that the plant is also connected to the hospital for use in the non-portable water requirements (not used for drinking purposes).
Promoting
Green Energy
These environmentally conscious activities initiated by Masina hospital, situated in the heart of Mumbai vicinity can go a long way form of education to other organization & institutions also.
