Patients are admitted with severe infection, respiratory failure, shock, major trauma, post-operative complications or failure of one or more organs. The team rapidly assesses clinical signs, laboratory results, imaging and continuously monitored data to identify priorities and track response. Treatment can include oxygen or mechanical ventilation, circulatory support, antibiotics, renal support, procedures and coordinated specialist care. The department aims to stabilise vital functions, treat the underlying illness, prevent avoidable complications and guide patients and families through each stage of critical illness and recovery.
